The Nature of Community

I’ve been reading Walt Whitman this week.  I’ve been savoring it line by line.  I know you are all weary of my poetic rantings but I gotta share this piece of wonderful wording which best describes my love of community..

“I have perceiv’d that to be with those I like is enough,To stop in company with the rest at evening is enough,

To be surrounded by beautiful, curious, breathing, laughing flesh is enough,

To pass among them or touch any one, or rest my arm ever so lightly round his or her neck for a moment, what is this then?

I do not ask any more delight, I swim in it as in a sea.

There is something in staying close to men and women and looking on them, and in the contact and odor of them,  that pleases the soul well,

All things please the soul well but these please the soul well.”

Walt Whitman  “I sing the body electric”

  1. Now this may be enough to stop anymore of these poetic ramblings, mrs. You dredged up a memory of when I read about George Clooney and some of his, ah, “quirks” in a widely recognized magazine some years back. Unfortunately, I can’t remember which one. More unfortunately, when I read, “There is something in staying close to men and women and looking on them, and in the contact and odor of them, that pleases the soul well, . . .” it reminded me of Mr. Clooney’s alleged habit of having to smell the armpits of the women he dates. So, there. Now it’s on YOUR plate. YOU deal with it! I can’t! lol

So, anyway, to stay vaguely on topic here, I’m kinda glad that George doesn’t live in my community–not that my armpits would have anything to worry about–George and me, well, we’re just not each other’s, um, “type.”

I just haven’t viewed George quite the same. Maybe, however, after this post, you don’t view me the same, either, so you see, that’s part of communities, too, I guess.

OK – what’s tomorrow’s blog? Seriously, mrs., I love you. I’m just running on empty tonight!

Oh Beefy…you know how every town has a town “character?” Well…starting to think that’s you, babe…I mean that as a compliment! LOL

  2. Oh pinkbeefs, that does me in too. I somehow no longer think of him as the sexiest man alive. I know Matt Damon isn’t. I know that guy who won last year – what was his name – that guy who admitted to having hair implants…he is just grossy gross gross.

Anyway, I hold an English major dear to my heart, so I can ring poetry with you at any time Mrs. I always said when I was dating in college that I needed a man that could communicate like the poets I was reading. Luckily, I found him.

Here’s one of my favorites from Gerald Manley Hopkins

    ‘The Windhover’

I caught this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, – the achieve of, the mastery of the thing!

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: sheer plod makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermilion.

Most fabulous, PPPJ! well done….Damn I love poetry.
Check out Billy Collins sometime, he’s one of my more recent favorites these days.

  3. I think I “get” it, all except the last line which seems redundant and confusing. But, generally I’m down with this sentimental (and smelly) view of community.

I tagged you. If you want to participate in the meme, the rules are on my blog. 🙂 If you don’t want to participate I promise my cyber feelings won’t be hurt.

And when are you going to write about those ‘raising young boys’ issues that we talked about? I value your opinions!

Well, that’s sort of a “Whitman” thing…I suppose that’s something I actually like ’bout his work. The lines he repeats I feel are the ones I need to soak in further most of the time…either that or read them like Foghorn Leghorn speak and it’s sort of funny…

I will totally check out the tag rules, babe…

I promise I’ll get to the potty training stuff…my brain had been addled the last few weeks with work and life and holidays and such!

  4. I will never ever think of George Clooney the same way ever again.
No sniffing for me, and if I even catch someone that looks like hes a sniffin
I will cease to be a lady! ROFL! Pink Beefs.
Did read an article this week mrs. that said people that talked at least 10 minutes per day with another in the flesh improved their brain power. Alas, I am ruined..!

  5. I do so appreciate your support, Angie! lol I haven’t been able to look at him without serious “skunk eye” scrutiny ever since. I wish I could remember what the author’s name was. I want to say it was something like GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, but all I remember for sure was that the chick that wrote it went out with him, and I think it was kind of a payback article. Yes, he sniffed her, and she thought it was purr-etty danged strange! I seriously have to agree! mrs., I’ll be a character for you. 3 more days to NoBloMo!!!! Woohoo!
