When people tell you that you are beautiful you often don’t believe it. Sometimes when you hear that you are beautiful you might say, “thank you” and then you dismiss it. You find reasons it’s not true, not accurate, not real.
You try to convince the teller that they are wrong. “It’s this dress” or “It’s just that I’m wearing makeup today.”
You conjure ulterior motives for the teller, “she is being polite” or “he wants something from me.”
You counter with fears around the truth of this statement, “if I believe this, I am shallow” or “I must be humble.”
Today I’ll tell you that you are, indeed, beautiful and I will tell you that I am right about this. I will tell you that no matter what you wear on your face or your body, you are beautiful. You cannot help but be beautiful. It’s in your very skin, this beauty. If you wrap your arms about you, if you place your palms on the bare skin of your shoulders you will know this. You are beautiful, friend.
Breathe that today.
